Retired
and Senior Volunteer Program
Hands that spark purpose.
|
The
Retired and Senior Volunteer Program recruits and refers
volunteers 55 years and older to more than 40 nonprofit
local organizations.
Sponsored by Helping Hands Hawai'i, RSVP is a program of the Corporation for
National Service. It offers older adults opportunities to stay active and involved
and, in so doing, enhances their lives as well as the lives of those they touch
through their volunteer service.
On an average, RSVP participants serve from 2 to 40 hours a week in nonprofit
and public service agencies, working with a diverse group of people in addressing
a wide variety of community-based issues.
RSVP delivers its services by interviewing all potential volunteers, assessing
them on the basis of their skills and interests, and suggesting placement in
suitable assignments. The program actively collaborates with over 40 agencies,
offering recruitment of volunteers; technical assistance; orientation, consultation
and training; and record keeping in relation to all volunteers.
Each day, RSVP participants make a profound difference in our community while
enriching their own lives in the process. RSVP volunteers provide a full spectrum
of services in the community; working in such facilities as hospitals, care
homes and centers, museums, schools, and recreation centers.
These services include:
- Health
and nutrition by preparing and delivering meals to
the homebound elderly.
- Education
through tutoring and mentoring for children, teens,
and adults.
- Environmental
projects such as beach and neighborhood clean-ups and
graffiti removal.
- Public
safety through the court system.
- Community
and economic development through programs such as the
American Red Cross.
- Advocacy
for children of abuse and neglect.
- Advocacy
for the frail and isolated elderly.
- As
with all Helping Hands Hawai'i programs, Retired and
Senior Volunteers actively promotes volunteerism. For
