About

Our Purpose

Helping People Help Themselves

Helping Hands Hawai‘i brings hope in times of despair to thousands of local families and individuals each year.

Our mission is to provide critical social services to improve people’s quality of life and empower them on their path to a better tomorrow.

We envision a thriving, resilient, and self-sufficient community connected for generations through acts of aloha.

To achieve our mission, we administer programs that benefit our diverse community, including Bilingual Access Line, Community Clearinghouse, Representative Payee, and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Outreach as well as seasonal projects and emergency support through our work with Hawaii Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD).

It is the mission of Helping Hands Hawai‘i to provide critical social services to improve people’s quality of life and empower them on their path to a better tomorrow.

Our Story

Helping Hands Hawai‘i officially incorporated in 1974, evolving from the 1941 Honolulu Council of Social Agencies’ Volunteer Placement Bureau. We serve more than 13,000 individuals a year through direct service delivery to individuals and families who need the most help.

Our initiatives are funded by private donations from individuals, families, corporations, foundations, and trusts; government contracts with the City & County of Honolulu and the State of Hawaii; and select program service fees.

Helping Hands Hawai‘i is a vital lifeline for our community. Our programs create a safety net for Hawaii’s most vulnerable residents to overcome poverty, homelessness, food insecurity, household instability, and other challenges.

Separately, our programs represent distinct areas of need. Together, they work in concert to help all Hawaii residents realize their fullest potential in a rapidly evolving, increasingly global society.

Our work impacts lives every day, positively changing the outlook for families and individuals today and for generations to come.
